FSCG Airfield Video Soundtrack

I’m currently in the process of writing a new video soundtrack for my 2014 Airfield Video:

The progress

3.3.2016

  • String chords are spread over the orchestral voices (violins 1+2, violas, chellos and bass)
  • Added an Oboe/Flute melody to silent part.

4.3.2016

  • Oboe/Flute now plays with 4 voices
  • Bassoon added for slow part, as low octave addition for woodwinds
  • Bells and small bells have been added
  • Trumpets have been added at the end
  • Xylophone has been added for Pizzicato part (glider climbing at the winch cable)
  • Credit melody has been enhanced by flutes and oboes (4 voice, 2X2 Harmony, octaved)

TODOs:

  • Enhancement of Last part (Approach and Landing)
  • Percussion Redo
  • De-Clustering of woodwinds in silent part
  • Making instruments organic to add realism (still sounds like synthesized)
  • String Legato Workover (attack still hearable)

5.3.2016

So, the composition is ‘complete’, which means, that adding more would overload the whole thing.

Done since yesterday:

  • Enhancement of Last part (Approach and Landing)
  • Percussion Redo
  • De-Clustering of woodwinds in silent part

Next step will be:

  • Adapting Midi volumes of instruments
  • Add a random component to temporal sequence of notes
  • Adding expression and Pitchbend for realism
  • String Legato overhaul
  • Overwork velocities of percussion and Piano

After that:

  • Mixing
  • Mastering
  • Adding to video

06.03.3016:

Adapted Midi Volumes (better Instrument expressions). It’s a bit exagerated at some points, but I will fix this in finetuning.

Next:

  • Make organic (Pitchbends, Quantization)
  • Improve Legatos

After that:

  • Mixing and Mastering
  • Adding to Video

11.3.2016:

The most difficult part is done: making it organic and Legatos.

After that:

  • Minor tweaks
  • Mixing and Mastering
  • Adding to Video

From Breakdown To Sunrise

My first Approach is the Remake of ‘From Breakdown To Sunrise’ as an Orchestral Version.

I have downloaded a trial Version of Steinberg’s Symphony Orchestra Plugin, in order to evaluate it’s value for my final Goal, making soundtrack for videos.

In the past week I’ve been working on a project template for Orchestral Productions. An Orchestra has a certain layout. Each voice (MIDI Channel) has to be mapped onto it’s position in space. Depth simulation is achieved my mapping the Midi Track onto it’s Layer Channel. All Layer Channels are then routed to the Master channel.

Each depth Channels volume, filter and Reverb is configured with it’s depth properties to reflect the distance to the Listener.

From Breakdown To Sunrise is my first practise project with this template. I will document it’s progress here.

First Step: The Intro (Version 1)

One Step ahead: (only intro is organic, second part is currently with full volume)

Another step ahead … so this is the basic framework. Anything else is variation and tranposing, and of course a lot of tweaking and sound enrichment.

Almost done making the existing material more organic. The last view beats are not yet organic, just to demonstrate the difference, which is huge.

Oops, just found some malformed chors in the silent part, probably in woodwinds and brass. Gotta re-inspect.

Ok, The ‘Final’ Version (not really final, but I’ve learned enough to start making music for videos):
